As I write this I'm watching coverage of Apple's iPhone-related press conference on TWiT Live and engadget while contemplating the question - Should I keep my new iPhone 4?
Having upgraded from my iPhone 3G just over a week ago, I've been getting settled into my new phone and have ultimately decided that I will be keeping my phone. Here's why:
* Cameras – The phone has two cameras – one on the back of the phone and one on the front which I can us for "self portraits" with the kids. The camera can also shoot video, allowing me to capture moments I would normally catch with my Flip video camera (if I would only remember to bring it with me).
* Voice dialing – With voice dialing I can tell the phone to call anyone in my address book, a convenient safety feature for when I'm on the road.
* Upgrade fail – Having upgraded my 3G with the latest iPhone software I immediately started having difficulties - crashing apps, slow connections. While this isn't the reason I upgraded, it certainly is why I'm not willing to revert back. Plus, my kids and husband have already adopted the old iPhone as their new Touch and I might have to wrestle them for it back.
* Antenna issues – My husband and I were able to recreate the falling antenna issue, but only when we held the phone in a death grip. That being said, I did buy a case for the phone - even though it turns out I can now get a free case (per the aforementioned press conference) - less for the antenna issues and more for protection.
I do have one complaint about the new phone – it will not work with my work computer! I have always synched my iPhone to my work computer since it's the computer on which I spend the most time. It's not a new machine, but it's not that old either, currently running Mac OS X 10.4.11.
When I plugged the new iPhone into my computer for the first time I received a message that the phone REQUIRES Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later. Unfortunately, I cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard because it requires a Mac with an Intel-chip.
Lucky for me, I have a new laptop with the latest operating system – but it did make the transfer process a little more difficult for me. I can still import photos from the phone to my older computer, so don't ask me why I can't use my computer for the phone.
Ultimately, I am glad I upgraded to the iPhone 4 - but mostly because I was lacking much of the functionality that many have on the 3GS. If I a) hadn't been eligible for the upgrade or b) already had a 3GS, I'm sure I would not have made the move so quickly.
Will you buy the new iPhone 4? If you did, will you keep it?
